US-amerikanischer Admiral, Marinehistoriker, Seemachttheoretiker, Navalist, Imperialist; Mahan hatte großen Einfluss auf Theodore Roosevelt, war Befürworter des Panama-Kanals und des Erwerbs von US-Stützpunkten im Pazifik (u.a. Hawaii); Einfluß auf Wilhelm II. und die deutsche Flottenrüstung vor dem 1. Weltkrieg unter der Ägide von Tirpitz, nachdem eine informelle Übersetzung von Mahans Hauptwerk ins Deutsche zirkulierte. Dadurch hatte er ebenfalls Einfluss auf die britische Gegenrüstung (Dreadnaughts), die von den britischen "Navalists" formuliert wurde
